Women drivers no longer qualify for cheaper car insurance

Young female drivers are expected to bear the brunt of new insurance rules that come into force today.

A European court judgement says companies can no longer calculate premiums or benefits based on gender.

Women have typically enjoyed cheaper health and motor insurance in the past because they live longer and are less risky behind the wheel.

Donal Milmo-Penny is a director of the Professional Insurance Brokers Association.

He says it will take time to get a clear picture of the impact on the industry, but it looks like one particular group of drivers will be hit hard in future:
