Ireland to get ‘maximum benefit’ from EU Presidency – Gilmore


The government has today launched its detailed policy programme for our 6 month EU Presidency.

It sets out core principles for the term of stability, jobs and growth.

The programme is to have a ‘People-centred’ recovery, investment in job-friendly growth and a win-win engagement with our European partners.

The programme sets out legislative and other priorities across the EU Council.

The Taoiseach and Tanaiste are meeting with the President of the European Council Herman Van Rompuy in Dublin Castle today.

‘Recovery country leading Europe’

Launching the programme Taoiseach Enda Kenny said “This is our guiding policy document for a Presidency which is that of a recovery country leading recovery in Europe”.

“We’re already started our work and will pursue this programme in the interests of stability, jobs and growth”.

“We will not lose a minute in doing so – now is the time to deliver on what we have agreed together” he added.

While the Minister of State for European Affairs Lucinda Creighton said “It sets out what we’re working on, why it matters and what we hope to achieve”.

“I look forward to the Presidency implementing it in partnership with our fellow Member States, the European Commission, the European Parliament and other key partners in the coming six months” she added.
